By any other name.

Naming characters is a bitch. Well, for me anyway. I put way too much thought into it. God forbid you make a character you end up having to draw a million times and you end up hating the name though. 'Cause then it's there forever, taunting you.
I try to avoid using names that people I know have, but really it's kind of pointless to do that. I've known way to many Mikes to strike it from the list. The world needs Mikes. That's a scientific fact. A world without Mikes is hardly a world at all. The thing is I always fear that they're going to think it's some kind of reference to them. Then if they hate the character they'll always be like "why did you name that shitty character after me"? And I'm like "Dude (or girl dude as the case may be.) I totally didn't", but then you wonder if they believe you. I wonder if I'm the only person who stresses over this stuff so much.

The world does need Mikes. It truly does. I have met more Mikes in my life than any other person.

And yeah, I agree with you there. Naming a character after someone is just asking for trouble. That's why I also avoid it.

Yay for Mikes. ^___^

Anyway, I remember the first story I felt serious about writing. I asked permission from everyone I knew to use their names (though most shared names were just coincidence). Now I don't think I need to worry - Thomas Pynchon has inspired me to love silly names.

I know how you feel.

You name anyone "John" or "Jonathon" yet?XD

We do need Mikes. Without Mikes, LP wouldn't exist.
Had to get LP in there, man.

For some reason, Mike is a VERY popular name where I live. No kidding, every other man I meet is named Mike. I had a fried, when she was a little girl, that believed all men were named Mike because her dad, his best friend, his father and several of her cousins were named Mike. It took her several years to understand it was just a common name.

Mikes are typically assholes. Also, Davids. And, what the heck, I'm just gonna say all biblical names. ^^ At any rate, naming is hard. I have somewhat of a proficiency for it, however. I find a name I like and name the character that, eventually looking up the meaning and finding out that it suits the character perfectly. o_o; Weird.
I also keep a baby book around for just that purpose, though, and randomly open it to find a name until I get one I like. For instance, I will find you a good name for your next boy or a girl character and shall be horribly offended should you never use it:
Beagan (means "small one") boy
Cerelia (something to do with spring...) girl

Actually, those are pretty frikkin' odd-ball. Shall we try again? Okay. ^_^ La la la... Damn, but I'm goofing off. ^^;
Kettel, Crandall

Actually, it seems like I have to have a character to name in order to find a good name... Tis an unfortunate occurrence...
