By any other name.

Naming characters is a bitch. Well, for me anyway. I put way too much thought into it. God forbid you make a character you end up having to draw a million times and you end up hating the name though. 'Cause then it's there forever, taunting you.
I try to avoid using names that people I know have, but really it's kind of pointless to do that. I've known way to many Mikes to strike it from the list. The world needs Mikes. That's a scientific fact. A world without Mikes is hardly a world at all. The thing is I always fear that they're going to think it's some kind of reference to them. Then if they hate the character they'll always be like "why did you name that shitty character after me"? And I'm like "Dude (or girl dude as the case may be.) I totally didn't", but then you wonder if they believe you. I wonder if I'm the only person who stresses over this stuff so much.

I'm not sure what the breakdown on most people of a given name I've met would be. Mike is obviously up there or I wouldn't have chosen that as an example. Chris would have to be up there too for sure.

That's an awesome story. It reminds me of how my Mom though that all moths were named Mitch when she was little.

It's funny you should say that. Because Nina's name means grace, which is also her last name, making her doubly gracefull I guess.

I usually end up going to a baby name website when I need to name a character, which is a complete timesink. I end up reading hundreds of entries and never deciding on anything for days and days.

Crandall sounds like a cran-Randal. No one wants that flavor.

One of my first characters is named Kenya, and at the time I had no clue it was a country.

I tend to pull names from strange places.

Karge is named after someone. I don't know who because I saw it on a mailbox and thought it was a cool name.

Aliah is the name of a banker at my local bank, spelled backwards.

Roland is named after the Warren Zevon Song, of which the character was derived.

I think you might have told me about how you named her at some point, or maybe I read it. Anyway, it's interesting to hear how people decide to name their creations.

^_^ Enjoy. Some of my favorite examples are: V. (that's all he's known as, at least to begin with), Oedipa Maas (and her husband, radio DJ "Mucho" Maas), Roland Cherrycoke, Mike Fallopian, Roger Mexico, Tyrone Slothrop... man, I could go on.

Heh heh heh. ^_^ Cran-Randall. ^^
You should get a baby book to randomly flip through. Swear to God, it helps. ^^ It also makes people look at you crazy when they visit you:

my mom staring at baby book: ".... Is there... something you wanna' tell me?..."
me: "What?..."

urm I used to have difficulty with names but I usually always have a name can use, but its harder getting a name for a character rather than getting character for a name.
