The artist and his art.

Sat Oct 24, 2009, 6:01 PM
I find that if I learn something negative about an artist I have a hard time ever enjoying his work. My present colors my past. For the most part I try to avoid learning very much about artists I like. This goes for all art, from writing to music. If I find out the creator is racist it skews my experience. The severity of the flaw matches how much I can, or can't, enjoy the work. Racism pretty much destroys an artist for me. On the other hand if someone makes porn on the side, or whatever, it doesn't bother me at all because I'm not morally opposed to porn. For someone else that might be a deal breaker.

I don't know what it is in me that makes it hard for me to seperate the artist and the art, but I generally can't. I started thinking about this because I was reading an article about a famous artist and they mentioned, in passing, that he was a massive bigot. As soon as that info proccessed his work looked different to me. It was tinged by knowledge... This shouldn't be taken as an argument against knowledge. For me it's just a precaution. I know that if I find certain things out about a creator I may end up having to trash shelves full of books, and years of fandom, from not being able to distinguish between an artist and his, or her, work.

I too feel this way.. I found out that Dr. Seuss was a bit of a bigot towards the Japanese after Pearl Harbour, but afterwards he soon learned the errors of his way and that was what Horton Hears A Who was all about, so for him i still respect him.

I usually can seperate the artist from the art.... Wait, scratch that. There is more than one actor, artist, and musician that i frequently listen to, view, or discuss, becaue of who they are. Bit hypocritical if you knew me... Bu I like think that hipocrasy defines humanity.

As an actor, I know my work is affected by who I am, because depending on the part I'm playing, I have to line it with pieces of myself. Consequently I am aware of my flaws and while it pains me to know they exist, I acknowledge them rather than indulge in them. In Short, I understand why you would see people's work different if you discovered something about them, as I believe that all good artists, regardless of what art, put a little bit of themselves into their work, so it will shine or be tainted by themselves.

I think it really depends for me, but I think in some ways a lot of people are like this. You're certainly not the only one.

That's true, in fact Seuss made a great deal of US propaganda cartoons.

There's a certain ammount of hate that can be forgiven if the circumstances were such that it makes sense. We're all human and given to irrational thought from time to time.
